Whether your garage door is manual or automated, properly operating springs are responsible for the ease of opening and closing your door. Because the springs take the weight of your door, they are subject to high wear and their lifespan is limited.

Torsion Springs or Extension Springs?
There are 2 main types of garage door springs, torsion and extension springs. Here’s how you can tell which type your garage door uses:
- Torsion Springs:
- Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the garage door opening.
- They work by twisting or “torqueing” as the door opens or closes, storing and releasing energy to help lift and lower the door.
- Torsion springs are considered safer because they are typically located in a closed, metal shaft which reduces the risk of them snapping or coming loose.
- Extension Springs:
- Extension springs are mounted vertically on either side of the garage door or above the horizontal tracks.
- They work by extending and contracting as the door moves, providing the necessary force to lift and lower it.
- Extension springs are typically less expensive than torsion springs but are considered to be less safe due to the potential for them to fly off if they break.
